Forget the ring: Lab-grown diamonds are a scientist’s best friend

At a drab office park in a Washington suburb, in an unmarked building’s windowless lab, Yarden Tsach is growing diamonds.

Not rhinestones or cubic zirconia. Diamonds. Real ones. In a matter of eight weeks, inside a gas-filled chamber, he replicates a process that usually takes billions of years in the bowels of the planet. Carbon atom by carbon atom, he creates nature’s hardest, most brilliant and — if decades of advertisements are to be believed — most romantic stone.

No outsiders get to witness this genesis, though. WD Lab Grown Diamonds, where Tsach is chief technology officer, guards its approach as zealously as its address. These are the measures a company takes when it’s a target — of fierce competitors, potential jewel thieves and a traditional industry that would very much like it to go away.

“Everything is after us,” Tsach says. He doesn’t mean it as a joke.

Diamonds: Still Forever?

Here is a recipe: take a seed, the tiniest slither of carbon material and put it into a chamber. Add varying amounts of gases, including a carbon source, into the chamber. Heat to a very high temperature to produce plasma, in which the gases break down and carbon molecules attach themselves to the seed, causing it to grow. Let your CVD, or Chemical Vapour Deposition, simmer for anywhere between a few daysand a few weeks. Remove gases. Remove the now larger seed from the chamber and crack it open. New Company Producing Colorless Synthetic Diamonds

Washington, D.C.–A new company called WD Lab Grown Diamonds Corp. announced recently that it will begin selling loose, colorless synthetic diamonds online in December or January. The stones will be grown in a facility located just outside of Washington, D.C., using the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process. In an interview with National Jeweler on Monday, company founder and President Clive Hill said the company has been able to grow stones as large as 2.3 carats to date. Washington, DC – The Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) technology developed by WD Lab Grown Diamonds Corporation to produce lab grown diamond is very advanced and superbly controlled, according to Chemistry Nobel Prize Laureate Dan Shechtman, who recently toured WD Lab Grown Diamonds facilities outside Washington, DC.

“WD Lab Grown Diamonds technology allows nearly perfect control of the grown diamond properties,” Shechtman said. “With that technology, WD Lab Grown Diamonds has succeeded in achieving what many other companies have been trying to do for the past three decades.”

Shechtman was awarded the 2011 Nobel Prize in Chemistry in for his discovery of the quasi-periodic materials. He is the Philip Tobias Distinguished Professor of Materials Science at the Technion – Israeli Institute of Technology, an Associate of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Ames Laboratory and Distinguished Professor of Materials Science at Iowa State University.

WD Lab Grown Diamonds CVD technology allows the firm to produce colorless stones – D and E color – up to 5ct carats in size. In the CVD process, a tiny fragment of diamond – or a “seed” – is placed in a chamber. Varying amounts of gases that include a carbon source are fed into the chamber. The gas mixture is heated to produce plasma in which the gases break down and carbon atoms adhere to the diamond seed, causing it to grow.

The CVD process grows a diamond in just a few weeks, as opposed to the millions of years it takes to form a diamond in nature. Lab-grown CVD diamonds are optically, structurally, chemically and atomically identical to naturally formed diamonds.

“The diamonds grown by WD Lab Grown Diamonds are also brilliantly cut and exceedingly beautiful,” Shechtman said after touring WD Lab Grown Diamonds facilities. “Given this company’s technological and commercial expertise, I expect WD Lab Grown Diamonds to be very successful, and expect the lab grown diamonds to gain a growing share of the gem stone market.”
